It is the capital of the Mambe're'-Kade'i" Prefecture. The city is situated in the south-west of the country near the border with Cameroon. Berbe'rati was ceded by France to Germany under the terms of the 1911 Morocco-Congo Treaty, becoming part of the German colony of Neukamerun until it was reconquered by the French during WW1. It is home to an airport and a major hospital and is often visited by tourists to the Dzanga-Sangha Reserve.
