The provincial capital of Beni Suef, famed in the Middle Ages for its linen, lies on the west bank of the Nile, at the point where the valley is at its widest and a road goes off into the Fayyum. It is the economic center of the fertile surrounding region, with various processing industries (particularly cotton) and a large bazaar.
