HOME and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Wednesday promised all help to the Water Resources Department to promote the Willingdon Water Works, Vellayambalam, and the 200-metre tunnel there as tourist spots.

He was inaugurating the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Water Works.

The Tourism Department and the Water Resources Department will work together to promote dams and other locations in the State as tourist spots, he said.

Completing unfinished projects, renovating and streamlining existing projects plus replacing pipelines and taking up new projects top the priority list of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA), Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran, who presided, said.

Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma, who was the chief guest, urged the public to protect water bodies and curb misuse of water. ``I was here when the Water Works was inaugurated. I can’t believe that 75 years have passed,’’ he said.

Law Minister M. Vijayakumar opened the tunnel for the public. Deputy Leader of the Opposition G. Karthikeyan flagged off the Blue Brigade, a 24/7 unit formed to deal with emergency works of the KWA.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu, Pannian Raveendran MP, MLAs V. Surendran Pillai and Mangode Radhakrishnan and KWA MD C.Suresh Babu were among those present.
