A NEW action plan to promote tourism in West Lothian has been drawn up after it emerged the industry was worth more than £30 million a year to the area.

The figures were revealed in a report from independent consultants, which also proposed a strategy to focus on the area's strengths.

These included promoting shopping in Livingston, the heritage of Linlithgow, development of cultural and sporting events and development of business tourism. The need for improvements to visitor information services were also highlighted.

West Lothian Council has now agreed to set up a new public/private partnership company to work with VisitScotland, West Lothian Tourism Forum and private organisations in the hotel, retail and heritage sectors.

Council leader Peter Johnston said: "Establishing common goals and pooling experience and resources will strengthen local tourism services."
