Police used a Taser stun gun to subdue a man during a chase through the streets of Surfers Paradise, on the Gold Coast, and onto the beach today.

Officers spotted a woman stealing a large number of items from a shop in Orchid Avenue around 11.15am (AEST) today before getting into a car, which officers then intercepted, police said.

The male driver got out of the vehicle and was chased by police through the streets before officers caught him in the beach's sand dunes.

During the chase, the man kicked an officer several times in an bid to escape over a fence, police said.

Police used a Taser stun gun after he appeared to threaten officers.

A 39-year-old man is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with two counts of obstructing police, assaulting police and disqualified driving.

A 33-year-old woman has been charged with stealing and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on April 16
