Searchers were out at first light again today looking for a missing tourist who is now feared drowned at Mt Maunganui in the Bay of Plenty.

The teenager was with a group of friends when he got into trouble while swimming at the beach about 5.20pm

Local surfers tried to help the group but the man disappeared under the surface and could not be found.

A search began but was called off when the light faded.

It began again at first light today with inflatable rescue boats from the Mt Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Club and a ground party.

The 19-year-old was from Zimbabwe but lived in London.

Police said the man had probably drowned.
