Toll-free travel doesn't fare well

I found the Sept. 23 letter from the director of the Maine Better Transportation Association interesting, because it appears the Maine Turnpike is currently breaking its legal promise with its bondholders.
Maria Fuentes points out that public toll-free travel on the turnpike is illegal, but the last time I checked, there are a couple of long stretches of the turnpike between Auburn and Sabattus that many residents of that area enjoy toll-free every day, along with another stretch between Gardiner and Augusta.
So while I have to pay 60 cents to travel from the Portland Jetport to Westbrook (maybe a mile), others can travel miles of the turnpike between those other cities free of charge.
Since the Maine Better Transportation Association (aka a lobbying group whose purpose is to get more construction projects for its members) is located in Augusta, I wonder when the last time Ms. Fuentes or the other "advocates of the Maine transportation system" paid to use the turnpike.
I hope these advocates are quick to jump on this illegal use of the turnpike and sue for an equitable toll structure that actually requires all who use the turnpike to pay for an appropriate share. Bill Wardwell
