The Australian tourist brutally beaten in Ocean Beach is expected to have a full recovery and will be heading home soon.
26-year old Robert Schneider came to San Diego, on a mission to surf the world. But his year-long mission was cut short in February when he was beaten unconscious and tossed into a fire in Ocean Beach.
Schneider spent more than a month at U.C.S.D.'s burn center. He suffered third degree burns over 15% of his body and multiple fractures. But now, five weeks after he nearly died, Schneider is being released from the hospital.
"He may have issues with headaches, memory loss, concentration, and slight personality changes," says Dr. Bruce Potenza. "Over time I would expect those to improve and for him to have a full functioning recovery."
After an outpour of support from the community, Schneider had a message for San Diego, "Thank you everyone. Thank you San Diego."
On Monday, after a nationwide hunt, police arrested the two men accused of the beatings. 21-year old Damian Maple and 46-year old Frank Montoya. Both are being extradited to San Diego where they will face charges of torture, mayhem and possibly attempted murder.
Schneider is getting ready to head home, but says he will continue his travels, and may even return to San Diego.
